At Sharetribe, we've taken several steps to ensure we are a responsible steward of your customer data, and a reliable partner for them for years to come. Today, 15 years after Sharetribe was founded, we are sustainably funded by our 1,500+ customers. All of our customers pay according to the same, transparent pricing. Since the launch of our first subscription product in 2014, our prices have increased less than inflation, which is documented on our public pricing changelog. 

Sharetribe is a steward-owned company. It means that nobody can buy Sharetribe. As stewards, we can't extract profits from the company and put them into our own pockets. Our salaries are capped at market rates, and returns to investors are capped at 5X. Voting power is distributed democratically: one steward, one vote. The only voting share not held by our team is held by a foundation that’s bound to never allow the company to be sold. A private equity firm will never buy Sharetribe and sell us for parts or increase prices to our customers to maximize profit.

Because our investors don’t have decision-making power, we will never yield to the demands of investors. We can prioritize our roadmap based on what the majority of our customers want. This includes considering actual customer needs when building new AI functionality, not what investors want to see. 

And after paying back our investors and paying the delayed compensation for early team members, 100% of Sharetribe's profits will go into realizing our mission to democratize platform ownership. This might mean additional investments in new technology or adjacent products—or lowering our prices.

We will always charge only what we need to charge in order for us to keep pursuing our mission. We exist to help you succeed, and if you succeed, we’ve reached our goal.

The vision: Grow with big data

There's one aspect where large incumbent marketplaces hold a competitive advantage over newcomers: they have access to vast amounts of data, an they use this data to analyze and optimize their funnel, pricing, and other parts of their operations. Essentially, the more data they have, the faster they can grow.

At Sharetribe, one of our goals is to remove this competitive advantage from the incumbents by democratizing access to marketplace data. When combined, the 1500+ marketplaces we power are used by millions of people all around the world, and they process millions of transactions every year. This means Sharetribe has access to large amounts of marketplace data. We’re finding ways to make this data accessible to all our customers, so you can use it to analyze and optimize your operations even before reaching a big scale.

This plan is still in its early days, but AI is already making it much easier for us to process and analyze marketplace data and turn it into useful products for our customers, naturally using fully anonymized data, only with consent from our customers.

We believe this will open countless new opportunities for marketplace founders to solve key issues like the chicken-and-egg problem or reaching the initial atomic network. With Sharetribe, you will grow further than you would alone.
