Frequently asked questions

1. What is the difference between Sharetribe Flex and Sharetribe Go?

The biggest differences between Go and Flex are the level of customizability and the technical skills needed.

With Go, you can set up a marketplace in a matter of minutes without any technical skills. It offers you a complete marketplace feature set, comprehensive admin tools, and a well-designed user interface. However, there’s a limit to how much you can customize your marketplace.

Flex is a lot more flexible than Go. Like Go, it offers you the basic marketplace functionality out of the box. Unlike Go, Flex allows you to custom-code additional features and build a completely customized user interface. This means you get a unique marketplace website with 5–10% of the time and money it would take to build a platform from scratch. The built-in flexibility also makes Flex a scalable solution that you’ll never grow out of. However, you do need development expertise in your team and getting into the market will take slightly longer.

If you have difficulty choosing, check out this comparison of the most important features of Go and Flex.

2. Should I choose Flex or Go for my marketplace idea?

This is mostly up to you, your budget and your technical skills.

Go is the fastest and easiest way to set up a marketplace platform. If it offers you all of the features you need, we always recommend getting started with Go first. If you plan to keep your marketplace a small business or a hobby, Go is probably the right choice then, too.

If, however, you already know what extra features your users will need and plan to grow your marketplace to tens of thousands of users, Flex is usually the better solution. It offers more flexibility and customization and can handle any future challenges.

If you do not have a developer on your team, you need to consider if you are willing to invest in hiring someone to build your Flex marketplace for you (we can help with finding a developer!). If you are unsure, you might still want to validate your marketplace concept with Sharetribe Go first, for which you don’t need a developer. You can easily migrate from Go to Flex later.

If you have difficulty choosing, check out this comparison of the most important features of Go and Flex.

3. Can I upgrade from Go to Flex?

Yes. We can export your data from Sharetribe Go and import it into a Flex marketplace. Studiotime, Kinspiring, and Swimmy all started with Sharetribe Go, and later their users and listings were moved to their new, Flex-powered sites.

Note, though, that your entire Go marketplace won’t be imported to Flex. You need to build an entirely new, Flex-powered user interface when you move from Go to Flex.

4. I’m not a developer. Can I still use Flex?

It’s not possible to use Flex without doing any development. How much of it you need depends on your marketplace idea.

At the very least, you will have to set up Flex Template for Web, host it, do the necessary configurations, and customize the look and feel. All of that is done with code. We have written thorough documentation that will guide you through all of the steps, but the documentation expects that you are familiar with basic front-end development tools.

However, we’d be happy to help you find a qualified Flex developer to partner with. , and we’ll help you forward from there.

5. What’s the point in using Flex if I still need to hire a developer?

Marketplaces have a lot of features that are almost identical across platforms. However, many aspects of the essential marketplace user experience, like availability calendar, advanced search, or transaction processes, are complicated and time-consuming features to build even for large, highly skilled dev teams.

Flex gives you all of these essential features out of the box. The Sharetribe team has years of experience working with marketplaces, so they know exactly how to build a platform where the user experience is smooth from day one. According to the development agencies we work with from around the world, the cost of Flex is around 5–10% of what it would take to build a similar marketplace from scratch.

By letting us do the heavy lifting for you, you don’t need to spend your development budget on re-inventing the wheel with marketplace basics. Instead, you can use your development resource on things that make your marketplace truly unique.

6. I requested access to Flex. What happens next?

Next, we’ll take a look at your replies to see if Flex is a good fit for your marketplace idea. At the moment, Flex is an ideal match with marketplace concepts that deal with rentals or services. For buying and selling products, for example, Flex isn’t a great choice.

If your marketplace is a match, you will receive a welcome email and credentials to your Admin Console. That’s where you manage and monitor your marketplace. You’ll find information about the next steps after you log in to Console.

7. When do I start paying for Flex?

You can develop your marketplace on Flex as long as you need to, completely for free. You only start paying when you move your marketplace from the test environment to the production environment.

8. What programming language should I use to build my Flex marketplace?

You can use the programming language of your choice to work with the Flex API.

If you want to use Flex Template for Web to create your marketplace site, you need to be familiar with its technology stack.

Here are the main technologies the Flex Template for Web uses:

  • JavaScript: the programming language for the whole application
  • React: library for creating user interfaces with components
  • CSS: styling the user interface using CSS Modules
  • Redux: state and data flow handling
  • Final Form: forms
  • React Router: routing
  • Express: server
  • Node.js: server rendering

You can find a comprehensive guide to working with Flex Template for Web in the Flex documentation.
