Limit the number of images per listing

Learn how you can limit the number of images for listings on your marketplace.

Written by Yifan Dong

You can limit how many images providers can add to a listing on the marketplace. You set the limit separately for each listing type in Console.

On many marketplaces, a few images give customers all the information they need. On some, one image is enough. Since images count towards your marketplace's usage, an image limit can also help you manage your marketplace's usage costs.

How to limit images per listing

By default, every listing type that uses images allows an unlimited number of images. To set a limit:

  1. In Console, go to Build > Listings > Listing types.

  2. Open the listing type you want to limit.

  3. In the default listing fields, make sure Images is enabled. The Image settings section only appears when the Images field is enabled.

  4. Under Image settings, select Limit the number of images per listing.

  5. In “Number of images allowed per listing” field, enter the maximum number of images. The minimum is 1 and the maximum is 100.

  6. Save your changes.

If you have several listing types, you can set a different image limit for each one, or keep some unlimited. To remove a limit, unselect Limit the number of images per listing and save.

After setting a limit, review the placeholder providers see in the Photos tab. By default, it reads “Upload 2-3 good-quality photos from different angles.", which might not match the limits you set. You can edit it in Build > Content > Marketplace texts.

What providers see

Providers can add images in the Photos tab of the listing editor until they reach the limit. Once the listing has the maximum number of images, the + Add a photo box disappears, so no more images can be uploaded.

The limit applies both when providers create a new listing and when they edit an existing one. If a provider removes an image and the number of images is below the limit again, the + Add a photo box appears again.

Listings with more images than the limit

Adding or lowering an image limit doesn't remove images from existing listings. Listings created before the change keep all their images, even if they now have more than the limit allows.

However, when a provider edits one of these listings, the Save changes button in the Photos tab is disabled. The provider sees an error message that tells them how many images are allowed, for example: “This listing can have up to 5 images. Remove extra images to save.” Once they remove enough images to be within the limit, they can save their changes.

You can also edit existing listings yourself, using the "Log in as..." feature, to remove listing images on the provider's behalf.
