Disable file uploads and downloads

Learn how to disable file uploads and downloads in your marketplace.

Written by Yifan Dong

If you've enabled file attachments in messages, users will be able to send and receive digital files in the messages they exchange on the marketplace. However, at times, you may need to switch this off. For example, for security reasons, such as an attacker sending users messages with malicious files attached.

To enable this setting, go to General → Access control and enable Disable file uploads and downloads. Once enabled:

  • Users can no longer upload or attach files to their messages.

  • Files that were already uploaded and sent before the restriction was enabled can no longer be downloaded, by either party.

In other words, this affects files that have already been exchanged, not just new ones, so it removes access to existing attachments as well as preventing new uploads. Any files already in the middle of uploading when you enable the setting will not be interrupted.

The marketplace will display a generic text "{marketplaceName} has temporarily disabled file uploads and downloads. Contact support for more information."

This text can be modified by using the Marketplace texts feature.

Note that this restriction applies only to your marketplace end-users. As the operator, you can still view and download files attached to messages in Console, on the Manage transactions page so you retain access to existing attachments even while uploads and downloads are disabled for end-users on the marketplace.
