Plans to Migrate Sharetribe to Rails 6?

Does Sharetribe have any plans to migrate the Sharetribe Go version to Rails 6 any time soon?

It is not critical at all for us, but I have someone in my office asking me about it before they commit to customization of the current version. Thanks!

Good questions, @CharityMarketplace!

Right now, we are not working on this but I’m pretty sure we’ll upgrade before the summer, as the security support period for rails v5.2 (the current version) ends on next June. Most likely, we’ll upgrade to v6.x but this is not fully defined, yet.

I don’t have a more detailed timeline to share, but hopefully, this information helps already!

Thanks so much Thomas!

It is precisely because of the Rails security support expiring that someone in my office was questioning making modifications to the current version. That said, I don’t think it will be a big thing for us to retrofit a few changes we make on our end now into whatever is released by your team for Rails 6.x.

I wish I knew more about Rails to be able to make the best decisions on how to smartly make functional changes to your code base that would allow for easy re-integration with any changes and updates that Sharetribe releases in the future.

Thanks again! We are really appreciative of the code base, and you answering questions about it here in forum! - Susan

Hey Susan, and thanks for the kind words!

Indeed, I don’t think you should wait until that update is available. After this one, there surely will be another, then another, etc. So, better to get moving already!

I would imagine that even if that will need some close review, it shouldn’t be terrible for you to upgrade to Rails once available. You could also do it without taking an upstream update from us, but look at our work for inspiration.

As an extra note, it seems that one ~big change with that update will likely be a change with the component we use to process and store images. It’s quite outdated so, likely, there will be some changes there, but I’m not sure what that will be exactly, yet.

Keep up the good work!
