Adding VAT in Sharetribe

Is there anyway to add VAT in the Sharetribe system?

Maybe I should explain.
My site is used by smal companys ad they set the price excluded TAX, but TAX needs to be added in checkout.
Any wway to do that?

Hey there!

Well of course you can build anything, so yes this is possible but you’ll have to dig into multiple places in the code to build VAT support, as this isn’t an available feature yet.

If you move forward with building this feature, here are a few things I can think of:

  • Of course you should probably spend a bit of time to learn what are the legal details of VAT in your country, and what if your buyers are in another country. You should also discuss with your users to learn what exactly do they need here.
  • Who defines the VAT? Admin or provider? Or maybe even the buyer, if they are buying electronic goods in a different country than the seller (legal rules are pretty complex in that case)?
  • Is VAT collected over the whole payment, or only part of it? What about shipping, should VAT be applied before or after shipping?
  • Should the VAT be applied to your commission too?
  • How to display the VAT? Should the price on the homepage be the price with or without VAT? Should the price on the listing page be the one with or without VAT? Should there be a info text to explain to buyers that VAT will be added?
  • What if buyers have their own VAT number (in that case, they don’t have to pay it): should you build a way for buyers to input their own VAT number during the transaction process?
  • The payment process, the price breakdowns, the email receipts have to be updated to show the VAT.
  • Does Stripe (or your payment gateway) support VAT? Probably, so you’ll have to edit the transaction process to take it into account, according to your payment gateway possibilities.
  • How does VAT works with refund?

There are probably more things to consider, but hopefully this list will help you a bit already if you decide to build this feature.

I am running a company and I think when you run a Biz Tax need to be added to everything you deal with.
I dont think you can charge someone for something and dont pay VAT(TAX) for it if you are running a company with VAT nr.
are there any plan to implement VAT(TAX) option to Sharetribe as you know it?

Hi Emil,

I would imagine that indeed you have to charge the VAT to all your customers, unless of course they also have a VAT ID they can provide (then VAT should be 0).
But again, if you want to build this feature yourself for your own project, you should find out what is your exact scope and legal constraints, along with answers to at least the questions I’ve shared earlier.

Right now we are not working on VAT support in Sharetribe’s solution. This is something we may add at some point, but I don’t have any timeline to share.

Well that´s sade to hear, it kind of put Sharetribe out of picture as a B2B solution.

Well the good news is that, if you’ve learned already that this is key for your project, and as you’re already using/considering the open-source version, you can build this feature yourself or by hiring your own team, independently from Sharetribe, at your own pace, on your own servers :wink:

hahaha well Thomas I am using the open.source version and been using it for 2 years at my own Pace and on my own server with my own team :wink: problem is that if i make change to the script it makes is difficult to update next time the opensource updates. But I guess you are not in to B2B solution. I guess i take a look at prestashop and se if I can add rental and multi vendor option and change system. by the way my sharetribe is at kamerakit.se :smile:
